Susan Norquist, Westborough Center Director
Welcome! I am the Center Director for the Westborough Early Education & Care program and have been with the YWCA since August of 2007. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Counseling from Lyndon State College in Vermont. I am Director 2 Certified through the Department of Early Education and Care. I have worked in early education for over 10 years and many years in the social work field. I feel very strongly about the need for quality educational centers for young children. Children at our program are given a safe and nurturing place to learn and develop, while receiving a well-rounded education. We have a strong dedicated teaching staff who are committed to the profession of teaching.

Hello! I have over 20 years of experience in childcare and an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. Even though I have worked with all age groups (infants for 15 years, toddlers for 5 years, and preschool for 1 year) my first loves are infants & toddlers. I hope to return to school to earn my Bachelor’s Degree.

I started working with children during high school at Girls Inc. of Worcester where I was a group leader. During college I worked at an after school program in Framingham and also taught Kindergarten and second grade in Dorchester, MA. During my years while working with children I have experienced many different cultural and economic backgrounds and have gained priceless experience.

I grew up in Westborough and started teaching preschool with my mother at the Allen Nursery and Dance School, which she owned for 43 years! My love in life is working with young children. I received my Early Childhood Education Teaching Certification from Becker College in Worcester, MA. I have raised two children of my own, Kristi and Jared. I have been the Preschool 1 Teacher for over 5 years.

The YWCA Central Massachusetts Early Education & Care program utilizes Creative Curriculum, a developmentally appropriate practice that focuses on each child’s individual needs and interests.  The Preschool also incorporates the “Second Step Curriculum”, a violence prevention program that develops social and emotional skills.  Both Creative Curriculum and Second Step align with the Massachusetts Preschool Guidelines and Standards.

Infant & Toddler Curriculum
The infant and toddler programs at both locations use a purchased comprehensive developmentally appropriate curriculum called Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Twos. This curriculum includes goals and objectives that show teachers where they need to go and how to get there in the areas of social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language development. Teachers plan individual and group activities that focus on the different domains in the classroom. The curriculum has five components; knowing infants, toddlers & twos; creating a responsive environment; what children are learning; caring & teaching; and partnering with families. These components help teachers make good decisions about routines and experiences provided for infants, toddlers and twos.

Through child observation and assessment, a teacher can identify needs and plan for each child’s interests and abilities in their group. Teachers plan intentional, appropriate activities and experiences to meet each child’s goals and objectives. Creative Curriculum shows the typical sequence of development for each objective. Teachers plan individual weekly curriculum for infants and weekly group curriculum for toddlers. The curriculum is integrated into each classroom and meets the needs of diverse learners.

Preschool Curriculum
Preschool classrooms use Creative Curriculum for Preschoolers.net and Second Step Curriculum to plan learning experiences that support the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual and language development. Both curricula align with implementing the Massachusetts Preschool Guidelines and Standards.

Creative Curriculum child assessments allows the teacher to identify and plan a curriculum providing intentional activities and experiences that meet the interests and abilities of each child including those with disabilities. Because the curriculum is developmentally based, it provides a useful framework for assessing where children are on a continuum and for meeting individual needs which may require re-organizing the physical environment to promote learning, knowing the child’s learning style, or adjusting the daily schedule. The curriculum, which is theme-based, is planned weekly and teachers indicate the link to the state preschool guidelines and standards on each activity.

For children with challenging behaviors preschool teachers use Second Step Curriculum, which is a violence prevention curriculum that promotes positive reinforcement. The curriculum teaches children to respect classroom rules such as, sitting quietly and raising their hand at circle time and provide appropriates ways to identify and express their emotions. Throughout the day children receive a heart for positive acts; these hearts are counted at the end of the day for positive reinforcement.

Assessments
Creative Curriculum Developmental Assessments are completed every three months. Parents will receive a paper version of their child’s development. Assessments are available online for preschool parents to access your child’s portfolio with an online access number.

One month prior to your child’s quarterly assessment, parents will receive communications notifying you of the upcoming assessment. This notification also provides parents with the opportunity to update staff on their child’s development as well as any goals you may have for your child over the next three months. Once assessments are completed, a copy of the report will be filed in the center’s records and parents will receive another copy. We suggest scheduling a Parent/Teacher conference at this time.

Swimming Component
The YWCA’s central location in Worcester has a large, heated indoor pool that is staffed by experienced swimming instructors and lifeguards. Every child enrolled in the Worcester Child Care Center preschool program participates in a weekly 30-minute swim lesson, conducted by certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. The class is designed to give your child basic water skills and/or confidence in the water. Parents are invited to observe their child from the 2nd floor fitness area observation window that overlooks the pool.

Please bring these items to school on your child’s swim day in a cloth bag or back pack, and take them home for laundering that evening:

• Towel (please label with child’s name)
• Bathing suit and slippers to wear in the pool area
• Bathing cap (can be purchased at YWCA pool desk)

The Learning 4 Fun After School program serves children 5 -12 years old. The program runs Monday through Friday throughout the academic year. School-age care is provided on professional development days and during school vacations weeks. Everyday activities include:

• Computer and technology
• Games and recreational fitness

Worcester Sites
Learning 4 Fun After School program on site at the Roosevelt Elementary and Wawecus Road Elementary schools in Worcester from 2:15 – 5:30 p.m. and offers transportation from surrounding schools (please contact the School Age Program Director for details).

Westborough Site
The YWCA offers the Learning 4 Fun After-school Program at its Westborough site located at 15 Grove Street not far from the public library. The Westborough Public Schools transports students to the YWCA immediately after school. The program runs Monday through Friday 2:15 – 6:00 p.m. throughout the academic year.

Camp Wind-in-the-Pines is a summer camp for school-aged children located on Stiles Reservoir in Leicester, MA and provides a wonderful opportunity for your child to explore nature and participate in recreational water sports.

The camp has ample amount of sandy beach and lakefront property with a boathouse and dock, several recreation halls, and a ball field and nature trail. The bath house is equipped with private rest rooms, showers and changing areas for campers.

Campers are divided into specific age groups and are instructed in areas that are developmentally appropriate. Each session is packed with themed activities, games, and projects, as well as traditional camp activities.

For the convenience of working parents, camp hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parents can choose to drop-off and pick-up their child at three locations – YWCA at Salem Square in Worcester, YWCA at Grove Street in Westborough or at Camp Wind-in-the-Pines in Leicester.

Counselor-in-Training
Ages 13 – 15 years

Once campers enter their teens they want a different experience–the Counselor-in-Training program (CIT) at Camp Wind-in-the-Pines provides teens with just that. The CIT program prepares teens to become future leaders by developing self-esteem, peer relations, interpersonal skills, and leadership techniques.

CIT participants will receive training to prepare them to work with adults, peers, and children. Training includes: Child Development, Group Dynamics, Curriculum Development, Conflict Resolution, and Child Abuse Prevention Training.

Scamper Camp

Designed especially for young children, Scamper Camp provides an exciting  and developmentally appropriate introduction to the summer camp experience. Campers participate in variety of summer of summer activities, including American Red Cross swim lessons at our indoor pool and field trips to Camp-in-the-Pines.

As part of the YWCA’s Early Education and Care Department, Scamper Camp staff is comprised of licensed preschool teachers and experienced counselors. Parents can sign their child(ren) up for one or all 10 weeks.

Infant
The YWCA’s Infant Program is for children one month to 15 months old. The focus of our Infant Program is on language, motor and social development. Our childcare staff caters to each infant’s individual schedule.

Toddler
The YWCA’s Toddler Program is for children 15 months to 36 months old. The focus of our Toddler Program is on socialization (sharing, taking turns and following directions); language development (conversational skills and vocabulary development); large motor skills (balancing and coordination); small motor skills (puzzles and beads) and creative arts (pasting, clay, collage and painting).

Pre-School Programs
The YWCA’s full-day Pre-School Programs are for children 2.9 to 6 years old. Emphasis is on sensory development, motor activities, language development, socialization, creative arts, reading readiness and math concepts. Activities centered around gym, cooking and field trips are also offered.

Group childcare allows children to learn and play in a healthy, secure, and friendly environment. YWCA Early Education and Care centers feature:
