“Crossing the finish line was truly amazing. My husband and my children were there cheering me on with tears of joy streaming down their faces. My 8 year old told me, ‘I am proud of you, Mom. You worked so hard and are empowered.’ This is a special word to us because it means strength, courage and belief that you can do the things you want to do with hard work.”

Liz Miner, a local resident and member of the YWCA , found the strength, inspiration and empowerment to complete her first triathlon in September 2009 thanks in part to the YWCA’s Kinetic Empowerment class.

Helping others become empowered is something that Mrs. Miner does on a daily basis as an Occupational Therapist at the Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital in Worcester. She works with a variety of patients at many different levels of physical fitness and need, including both physical disabilities and specific injuries.

“I am always watching how people move and have made some suggestions on how to change form or maximize exercises to best meet someone’s goals and especially to avoid injury.”

One of Mrs. Miner’s specialty areas as an Occupational Therapist is Lymphedema, she evaluates and treats patients with the condition that commonly appears after cancer treatment. As many of these patients are breast cancer survivors, Mrs. Miner often suggests the YWCA’s Encore Program “as an option to restart exercise and also to maintain results achieved after treatment in the clinic.” She also describes how the program is a great networking opportunity for survivors, allowing for them to meet others with similar goals as they work their way back into life as it was before.

It was Mrs. Miner’s eldest daughter Lacy’s participation in the YWCA’s Synchro-maids, a competitive synchronized swim team, that peaked her interest in the organization’s fitness offerings.

After spending countless hours watching Lacy swim, Mrs. Miner felt that she might as well be using the equipment that was within an arm’s reach from her seat on the pool deck. She began with the fitness room and pool at first, “but it was not until I started the Kinetic Empowerment class that my life really changed for the good.”

Mrs. Miner describes Kinetic Empowerment (KE) as “an amazing class that touches each and every part of your body. What I love is that no two classes are alike.” The class combines exercise, weight training, and agility activities using a variety of equipment and techniques, such as kettle bells, jump ropes, Dynavex balls, core strengthening, endurance training and timed circuit drills.

Mrs. Miner cites the strength and support of the KE instructors, Jennifer Mercier and KC Zytkiewicz. These women are behind Mrs. Miner and her fellow participants to ensure appropriate form in order to prevent injury as well as to be the voices of encouragement.

“They are both cheerleaders and task masters who are ultimately supportive to help you establish a goal and continue on the road to meet that goal whether it be the straight and narrow or a winding path.”

The path that Mrs. Miner took towards good health began to truly take shape when she realized that her body was changing. “I was shrinking. All of the sudden my shirts were getting bigger and my workout shorts were bagging off. I had to buy new shorts and clothes just to work out. It was amazing.”

Since beginning the KE classes in January of 2009, Mrs. Miner has dropped over 18 inches. She has come to the important realization “that it is not about the scale but how my body looks and acts.”

Along with improved blood pressure, cardiovascular capacity and overall strength, Mrs. Miner says that she has experienced less aches and pains than before beginning the KE program. These significant physical changes coincide with her goal of not having her children grow up worrying about her health as she did with her father, who died at a young age after having suffered from highly preventable illnesses.

It was with her new and improved body and mindset, along with the encouragement and guidance of her KE instructors, that Mrs. Miner entered TDD Triathlon in Douglas, Massachusetts on September 19, 2009. “I thought of the day as three steps. Once I completed the swim, I looked to the bike as ‘well one down and one to go, then one to go with the run.’ I know running is not my strongest skill so I power walked and ran as I could, but no matter what, crossing the finish line was truly amazing.”

Mrs. Miner remembers the 19th as “one of the greatest days in my life. This was one of the hardest, most rewarding events I ever did.”

“I am proud of myself for achieving my personal goal. I did give myself a time goal and I did better than it by 27 minutes. But my overall goal was to FINISH. And now I can call myself a TRIATHLETE. I earned that honor.” Mrs. Miner says that she has a new goal of entering three more triathlons in 2010. In addition to training specifically for these events, Mrs. Miner wants to continue gaining strength and improving her overall personal health.

She attends class twice a week, swims when her schedule allows, and watches her daughters in their synchronized swim classes. “I expect I will be around the YWCA for many years to come.”

The prevalence of risky behaviors can have a negative impact on a young person’s ability to grow and develop into a healthy, productive adult. Research shows that when young people achieve academic success, have significant relationships with caring adults, and are involved in community service and extracurricular activities they are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Healthy Youth Development programs such as the YWCA’s have a positive impact on young people’s ability to improve their self-expectation and resilience.

The YWCA’s Healthy Youth Development programming addresses the needs of youth from low to moderate-income families, the majority of whom are in some form of transition. The YWCA provides over 70 hours of recreation, physical activity, and wellness programs each week:

GPS
A violence and substance abuse prevention model offered to 125 middle school girls on their school site 1 hour per week for 35 weeks and in the summer for 45 different girls 1.5 hours, 1 day per week for 7 weeks.

Girls on the Go
Promotes healthy weight and is offered in 3 10-week sessions for up to 45 girls ages 10-14.

FitMath & More
A health and fitness program that teaches math and science vocabulary and concepts coupled with goal setting, leadership & careers. Programming is offered after school at the YWCA for 48 participants in grades 3-6 for 2 hours, 2 days per week for 16 weeks.

GoGirlGo

A Women’s Sports Foundation program strategy utilizing athlete role model biographies to stress concepts of body image, goal setting, leadership and careers. Offered to up to 45 girls in 3, 10-week sessions once a week for 1 hour with Girls on the Go and the Synchronized Swim Team.

YouthNet Year Round
A youth development program strategy for 11-14 year olds. The School Year model provides transportation up to 3 days per week from school to the YWCA for 2.5 hours of program before offering transportation to a neighborhood stop. Participants age 13 and up are encouraged to stay for additional programming. Registration is offered in 10-week sessions serving up to 30 participants. During the summer, programs are offered 7 weeks with transportation from neighborhoods to and from agencies, 3 nights per week with 1 night for girls only. Each night programs are provided for 3 hours. We expect to serve up to 75 participants each night. 350 different participants are expected to attend between the school year and summer initiatives.

American Red Cross Swim Lessons and Martial Arts
Using physical activity and progressive skill building to promote increased self-esteem. Swim lessons are offered in half-hour sessions to 150 participants per year. Group lessons are offered 5-6 participants per instructor. Martial Arts is offered by the month for 10 hours per week for 25 participants. Beginner level participants can attend one hour one day per week.

Synchronized Swim Team
Promotes team work, positive communication skills, leadership and progressive skill building. Attended by over 70 participants ages 5-18 for a minimum of 5 hours each week.

HOPE Coalition
A coalition of about 50 high school youth 14 years and up meeting once a week for 2 hours with additional community service and program leadership initiatives throughout the city and state each week.

Project Adventure
Team building and problem solving program strategies are offered as part of all of the above programs at the beginning and end of program sessions serving about 500 different participants.
